Krump History of New Zealand

The history of Krump in Aotearoa New Zealand reveals a vibrant and evolving community, rooted in self-expression and cultural connection, from its initial introduction in the mid-2000s to its current status as a community-driven art form.

Here is a comprehensive chronological history of participants, winners, "lil homies," "big homies," and Krump families in New Zealand:

Early Stirrings and Foundations (Circa 2004-2010)

Krump began to emerge in New Zealand around the mid-2000s. David LaChapelle's documentary Rize (2005) was a pivotal catalyst, influencing dancers across Aotearoa. Screenings of Rize in New Zealand, including at the Auckland International Film Festival, and the circulation of Krump DVDs, along with early social media platforms, were instrumental in popularizing the dance.

    • Auckland:
      • Aaron Hardy (AE): Introduced Krump to Auckland after returning from the US in early 2005 or late 2004, establishing an early movement known as "haters". This movement reportedly "died off about 2008" but laid crucial groundwork.
